Learn about instrument families and the instruments in them, listen to music featuring different instruments, and enjoy checking out real-live instruments our volunteers bring in to show us. Make and play some musical instruments of your own.
After the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra announces the dates for its free school time concerts we can choose a date for an optional field trip to see the real orchestra (open to ages)!
Note: Please send a lap-blanket (smaller than twin, small enough for your child to fold independently) with your child the first week that we can keep in the closet all semester. If you do not have a spare blanket or have questions please email me, as I have several extra blankets and I can provide them a dedicated blanket for the semester.

| Stories Songs and Poetry to Teach Reading and Writ |
| Grades: K - 2 | Julia Crenshaw | Friday 11:30am to 12:25pm |
| I am sooooo excited about this class full of language exposure for kids who are just about to start reading (already know most of their letters, can sound words out sometimes) or who are beginning readers (early 1st grade or 2nd graders who are just starting to click with reading).
In this class we will learn to notice, remember, and love words. We will read fantastic books with lots of repetition, work with the words in them in a pocket chart, and before long we will be able to read the texts ourselves. We will sing fun songs and work with the words in them to discover rhyme and the rhythm of language. We will read silly poems and alter them to write poetry of our very own. And above all, we will enjoy the literature we work with.
The approach for this class is called language exposure, and it will be a fantastic supplement to your home phonics program. We will reinforce and notice phonics but will not present phonics lessons here, as every child will be at a different spot with their phonics knowledge.
Each child will make a collection of the texts we work with so he can read them to you at home and show off his stuff.
This is a class I have been wanting to teach for years, and the timing is finally right! The content for the class comes from the book Stories, Songs, and Poetry to Teach Reading and Writing by Robert and Marlene McCracken.

| Scientific Investigations in Chemistry |
| Grades: 3 - 8 | Julia Crenshaw | Friday 12:30pm to 1:25pm |
| This class started out as a chemistry overview, but it evolved into more and more complex, multi-day experiments until I realized it wasn’t really an overview course on Chemistry, but rather an in-depth course on how to conduct experiments in a detailed, scientific manner.
Rather than giving a superficial overview of many chemistry topics, this class will explore 5-6 key concepts in detail. Through multi-day experiments and a focus on conducting lab work with attention to accuracy and detail, you will be able to complete very mature research! There will be at least one experiment that will be sent home for you to tend and observe over the course of a week. Because almost all of our experiments will be conducted over multiple days you will need to be able to attend the class almost every week in order to be successful with the experiments.
In this class you will:
Conduct hands-on experiments using safe household chemicals. Design a series experiments to be conducted over multiple days to identify the characteristics of known solids and liquids. Control variables in experiments in order to obtain accurate results. Make careful observation of subtle differences and record what you observed. Put together the pieces of the puzzle (make inferences) to draw conclusions as you identify unknown substances. Work cooperatively in groups of 3 to fulfill all the responsibilities of the lab.
Cost: $5-10 for lab supplies--I will finalize the cost and let you know after I'm able to go through the supplies on hand in the closet to see what we still need. I'm anticipating the cost will be on the low end, but there are several tools we will need, so I'll let you know.
