| Physics Workshop |
| Grades: 4 - 6 | Rachel Conner | Friday 9:00am to 9:55am |
| For Christmas my son got the Thames and Kosmos Physics Workshop, and the book that comes with it is a homeschoolers dream. It is really meaty -- like a children's text book (64 pages). However, my mechanically inclined son is using the gears to make sophisticated machines rather than actually reading the book. Can you see where E-Day comes in? In class, we are going to assume you read the pages that described the concepts and the experiment instructions AT HOME, and then we are going to reinforce those concepts by talking together as we do the experiments in class. THIS CLASS WILL ASSIGN HOMEWORK, but it will be the kind of homework that is easy to complete (just reading getting ready for in-class experiments). It will be so fun. The first experiment is finding out how far a matchstick will penetrate a potato. Need I say more? The class cost is plain and simple for more of the Physics Workshop kits. I intend that there will be enough kits to work alone or in pairs, depending on class attendance in a given week. Check out the kit on fatbraintoys.com if you want more info. I will try to get my husband physicist to pay a visit at some point. I welcome children who are NOT mechanically inclined to this class as well. Its about physics concepts, not building the most inventive machine. |

| Quintessential Boys- what boys need to know |
| Grades: 4 - 8 | Jennifer Lutz | Friday 12:30pm to 1:25pm |
| (Please Note: You can take Quintessential Boys 2 even if you didn't take the first class.)
The boys have created their own ‘boys only club’ called the EAG (Extremely Awesome Guys). It’s sort of like scouts meets Eday. We work on skills and when the boys complete them they receive a badge.
Last semester we worked on ‘Leaf Identification’ and ‘Knots’ for their badges, and guest speaker, Capt. Barna, spoke about the Army and ran the boys thru saluting, marching and more. At the end of the semester we had a party and raised $104 dollars for a charity called “Cup of Joe!”
This semester we will be working on:
‘Sewing 101’- sew a button, a seam, and finish a project. These skills are far from girly: what if your button falls off just before that million dollar interview, or your friend falls and hits his head off a rock and you have to stitch him together? Very important indeed!
‘Basic Automotive’- change a flat, check your oil, jump a car. Plan on getting oily and dirty.
‘Flag Etiquette’- Standards of Respect, Displaying the Flag, Raising and Lowering the Flag and more.
A ‘can do’ attitude is needed for this class. The boys are not required to earn a badge, but a great attitude is always necessary in class.
A $4 fee for supplies is requested. |
| Odyssey of the Mind |
| Grades: 5 - 8 | Mark Sentell and Dawna Hess | Friday 12:30pm to 1:25pm |
| Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program. Each OM team is composed of 5-7 students, and each team picks one of several fun problems to solve together at the competitions. We can sponsor as many teams as we have coaches, but each team must pick a unique problem. See http://www.odysseyofthemind.com/ for descriptions of this year's problems! The cost of registration and supplies will be approximately $20-$40 per student, depending on the number of participants and the chosen problems. |
| Shakespeare- Hamlet |
| Grades: 6 - 12 | Cim Rorison-Snyder | Friday 12:30pm to 1:25pm |
| Hamlet is one of the most quoted works in the English language, and is often included on lists of the worlds greatest literature.
Hamlet is the prince of Denmark, and a student at the University of Wittenberg. At the beginning of the play, Hamlet’s father, King Hamlet, has recently died, and his mother, Queen Gertrude, has married the new king, Hamlets uncle Claudius. Hamlet is bitter and full of disgust at his mother for marrying him. When the ghost of Hamlets father appears and claims to have been murdered by Claudius, Hamlet becomes obsessed with avenging his fathers death.
Hamlet is a character of many contradictions.
One facet of Hamlets exploration of the difficulty of attaining true knowledge is slipperiness of language. Words are used to communicate ideas, but they can also be used to distort the truth, manipulate other people, and serve as tools in corrupt quests for power.
Intrigue is rampant in this Shakespearean play with characters fully developed, yet their understanding of human nature is filled with inaccuracies and conflict.
This play by Shakespeare is both dramatic and great fun; fast paced and filled with topics which can easily lend themselves to interesting discussions.
